The recommended interval is 100k miles. It all depends on how hard you drive. Let the car warm up fully before using full throttle, don't rev to red-line a lot, and don't forget to change your oil religiously. Use of a good synthetic is highly recommended. The dealer has a BMW approved synthetic, but I use Mobil 1 15W50.

Since the valvetrain is identical to the M3, get the Koala Motorsport CD and follow along. You will need to buy or borrow a good 3/4" breaker, 36mm socket, and a flywheel holder. Or you can remove the radiator and AC condensor (a pain in the ass, though) and hit the crank nut with a good impact wrench. The rest is just wrenching.
