The correct tire size for the BMW e39 sport Styles 19, 42, 32 , 5 , 66M wheels is 235/45-17 and 255/40-17 with a 20mm offset, which are compatible on the e28. If the offset of the wheel is not correct for the car, the handling can be adversely affected. When the width of the wheel changes, the offset also changes numerically. If the offset were to stay the same while you added width, the additional width would be split evenly between the inside and outside. The e28 M5 wheel has a 20mm offset for reference. Comparatively the offset for an M System wheel used on an e34 M5 has a 20mm offset (17x8 255/40). While the M System wheel used on the e31 850CSI and optional M5 Nurburgring chassis package used a 17x9 wheel with a 22mm offset (255/40). In addition the e36 M3 Contour wheel has a much different offset approximately 38mm, these wheels have been known to cause rubbing on e28.
