I suppose it would be ideal to have the battery in the center of the trunk, but since the spare tire is offset to the driver's side and the gas tank is offset to the passenger's side (and the tank weight continuously changes as fuel levels change), it becomes a bit of a dynamic problem.

Actually, the best arrangement would be a battery mounted on a moveable "sled" that shifts positions to achieve perfect balance under all driving conditions.

Considering that you need to access your spare tire and you also want to be able to put things into your trunk that are larger than a loaf of bread, mounting the battery off to the right side of the trunk is the best option.

I'd be happy to supply pictures of my M5 battery box for anyone interested, but you'll have to wait until Monday since the M5 is in storage now and the only digital pictures I have are on my work computer.

Shouldn't it be in the middle???
