On a euro engine (single row timing chain compared to the double row on US spec car) you should do the timing chain every 100,000 kms (BMW Germany recomendation). This is circa 70k miles !

A good mechanic can 'pull through' a new chain once but at 200,000 kms (125,000 miles) you should do the job properly and replace the timing chain guides too - otherwise the (thin) chain will cut through them sooner or later - expensive.
