My 86 535i was just as bad - and installing the new unit (about a 6 hour job) made the thing feel like butter! It was like driving a faster new car - very gratifying! The only problem you risk from letting it go longer - is metal fatigue on the pedal bracket. I sell alot of these brackets - and they look like a stone cold PIA to install. We are offering OEM Sachs kits including disk, plate, release bearing and... (important!) release lever for $325.00 including UPS in the US.
The lever can wear - and on my car - there was a 1/8" gouge in it. I also chose to replace the pivot pin, guibo, pilot bearing, rear crank seal, and a few other odds n' ends while under there. All of them cheap insurance.
Hope this helps!
