No. Most people like the stock plugs and OEM style wires. I've heard a lot of complaints about Nology wires. You can get the best prices from bimmerworld.com. They have the same wire sets that Turner and BMP sell, but for $100 cheaper!! They're made by the exact same company, and they're the exact same wires and ends. The sets come with silicone dielectric grease, too.
I'm starting to feel the need for more power too. The car already has a JimC chip. I have been considering the cam gear. How much of a difference does this make?
None at all. The cam gear lowers the RPM of the torque peak. It does not increase the total torque output. It will make your car feel stronger at low RPMs, but you'll definitely notice a loss of power at high revs.
Any other good small mods to the power.
You'll need to install cams, lightweight flywheel, MAF kit, Euro header and resonator, muffler, lighter wheels, and lightweight clutch kit. Those are the only things you can do without major modifications. A lightweight flywheel and lighter wheels will reduce the amount of torque required to accelerate the drivetrain. That torque is then usable to accelerate the whole car. These benefits are most noticeable in 1st and 2nd. Otherwise, you can bore/stroke it, but that requires gobs of cash (about $8000). MAF kits replace the flap air-flow sensor with a hot-wire sensor. The old meters are very restrictive. Split Second makes a tunable conversion, but I hear they're very temperamental and require constant tuning/adjustment. Modern Performance also makes a kit which is easier to use. Ed Walters installed one on his 535is. You can see his page here. The above mods are probably the cheapest and easiest 50-60HP you can find.
The turbo can wait a year or so.
There is only one Dinan turbo M5, and that was recently purchased from Rob Levinson. I don't think anyone else has tried such a conversion. Dinan squeezed 475HP from that beast. There is a supercharged M5 in Canada. I can't find his website.
You could always install a US E34 M5 engine, rated at 315HP stock. Install the Jim C chip, and you're up to 340. Install cams, depending on the lift/duration, you could get a good 360-370. Sounds like a of of expense for only an extra 70-80HP. The stock US E28 M5 with Jim C chip is 292HP.
The old E34 M5 racecars had about 450-480hp, but I'm sure the engines cost about $20,000. I think they were based on the Euro 3.8L engine. You'll never find a 3.8L engine (340HP stock) for less than $10,000 used.
Good luck.
