What about a sheilded cone?

The stock filter is HUGE. Compare the surface area to the cone filter, and you will probably notice there is little to no increase. There are also more pleats in the stock filter, which means more surface area. The paper filters out smaller dust particles, too.

Whats the best way to proceed ? I've got a number of performance problems with the car so im sort of tackling what I can as the money comes in...

Good luck. These things aren't cheap.

does anyone know the true story on the bavauto chip for the M5 ? is it a dinan rebadge ? Is it worth the $299 or whatever to give JimC a try ?

I'm a firm believer in the Jim C software. My car has more miles than my brother's. His has the Dinan, mine has the Jim C. Mine is defnintely smoother and has more power, if only marginally. You can ask Will Turner if he will give you the $100 discount for trading your Bav Auto chip. That brings the Jim C chip down to $150. Jim C chips are tuned at all throttle ranges and all RPMs, not like others who only tune at full throttle. His chips also make your engine less prone to detonation due to too much timing advance/too little fuel. I get about 18.5 MPG city driving, too. Not that bad.

I think the PO also left me the stock chip, if so i definitely plan on doing some back to back dyno runs :)

Let us know what you find out!! Order the Jim C chip, dyno the Dinan, then dyno the stock, then dyno the Jim C. Compare and please report the results to us.

The stock catalyst is best, unless you get the Euro headers (instead of US header/manifolds) and Euro center resonator. Rob's exhaust is no longer in production (DRAT!). I'd love to get my hands on one. My car has a stock exhaust that is whisper quiet, even at 6500RPM. It's so quiet, it's annoying. I have emissions requirements here in NoVa, so removing the cat is not an option. Try a local hot-rod exhuast shop. Maybe they can fabricate a dual 2.25" or 2.5" exhaust for you. It's a lot cheaper than the OEM stuff!!

Good luck, and let us know how it's going...
