My '88 with 68k miles has developed a coolant leak over the past couple weeks (have to top off the coolant tank every couple of days). I've jacked up the car with the engine running and there is a constant drip of coolant every few seconds coming off of the front of the oil pan. It's very difficult to see exactly where it is coming from by looking from below with all the pulleys in the way. From the top it's not real apparent either, although I can see some coolant on what looks like the top of the water pump. Anybody have similar experience in this area? Is the water pump the likely culprit or is it maybe just a bad gasket between the block and the pump? Anybody replaced the water pump before and if so could you walk me through the procedure? Any suggestions on where to purchase a new or rebuilt one? Any help would be appreciated!

I would suspect the pump. Go with PacificBMW there price for a new "real" M pump is not much more than the standard 3.5 pump. Of course we can debate for days if the cast iron impreller is needed so get what you reel best with.
