I was lucky enough to borrow a real lift for the job once - but I'va also benchpressed 535i transmissions on my back too - (ask around - I'm a small guy with more attitude than brains sometimes!) :-)

On your back - I'd definitely add 2-3 hours.

If you're planning to do the replacement by yourself and have never done it before, I wouldn't be too enticed by his estimate of six hours though.
