This would be a good price if it checks out, maybe too good... Besides usual E28 stuff (all front and rear bushings, ball joints etc), check the self leveling rear susp - it will have to be replaced (Bilstein/Eibachs), probably soon if not immediately. Check for rust in usual areas, trunk (spare tire well) tail lights, bottoms of doors, wheel wells /arches, jack points. Seat frames can break, but repairable, new ones outrageous $$$$. Should have some maintenance records, new engine or rebuild is also huge $$$$. If no records, have compression and/or leak down done. Cat and/or exhaust is very pricey whether you go stock or not, 700 exhaust and similar for cat. I have heard steering box can get sloppy and need replacing. Clutch may need replacing soon. Also Guibo, center bearing, Ujoint (typical E28 stuff). Check all rubber hoses and bellows (there are alot of them) for cracks, dry rot. Squeeze 'em and look underneath. Thats all I can think of now.

I'm looking to buy an '88 M5 for $10k. It has 99k miles, looks great, all original, and well maintained. In addition to getting it checked out by my mechanic, will you M5-philes and hobbiests please give me the good, the bad, and the ugly about this one(what to look closely for). Also, is this a good price if it checks out?
I currently own an '88 535i and I love it.
Thanks.
