Prospective M5 Buyer Paranoia (archive)

I have just about decided to look for a nice 1988 M5 to have as my "project car". We have a 1999 540iA and I have an M5 on order, but I've always liked the E28 models and could save a boatload of money by getting a 1988 and keep the 1999 540, rather than trade it when the new M5 arrives.

But after reading the postings these past few weeks you guys have really scared me into thinking a 1988 M5 will be a black hole for money in repairs! Is it really that bad or am I just seeing the exceptions here?

Thanks for any help on this.

Scott R
