Did you check the u-joint at the differential? In my case, just checking for free play, between the drive shaft and the differential, was not enough. I found later, after it got worse, that you have to check the u-joint for how easily it "bends." My was corroded together and did not want to bend. At this point, lubing it is only a temporary fix. It should be replaced if the joint becomes seized. From my research, I found only two places that rebuild BMW shafts, Driveline Northwest in Portland, OR and a 2002 specialist that I can't seem to remember the name of. It's a fairly well known shop on the East coast. I went with Driveline since they had shafts ready to go and paid for shipping both ways. I think it costed around $300. Good luck. I hope your problem is something simple.
There are some strange noises coming from the right rear of my E28 M5. One is a metal on metal clacking or tapping sound that is most noticeable at low speeds. It is definitely speed or "rotation" related. The other is a clanking sound like something is loose. There is nothing visibly loose or out of place, either in the trunk or underneath. The clanking seems like it might be coming from the shock tower. The two noises don't seem to be related.
One more bit of information. The car was hit in the right rear quarterpanel a couple of years ago. The damage was fairly minor and was repaired. Could something have been damaged or knocked loose that is just now becoming a problem?
Any insights would be appreciated.
