First off, I will assume your going to replace all of the bushings because replacing the shifter alone won't cure the sloppiness. The E36 M3 shifter is a really good alternative OEM shifter. It reduces the throw by about 30% and fits without any problems. I have a Z3 shifter (it may be an MZ3, I don't remember) and it will not fit unless you have an ERK (which raises the pivot ball mount) from UUC. I bought an ERK and installed the Z3 shifter and it is an extremely short throw, probably a 50% reduction from stock. I believe UUC used to use this shifter as the basis for their shortest throw model but with the appropriate bends to position the shift knob close to stock. I reverted back to the M3 shifter because the Z3 shifter effort was too high and the position was wrong. I tried bending it but it is very difficult to do (I guess that's the reason for UUC's price). The E36 M3 shifter costed about $45 5 years ago. The Z3 shifter was about $50 1 year ago. For conversation purposes, UUC's latest product looks pretty good though I'm sure it's pricey. Many people swear by their previous shifter. I hope this helps.
