The replacement starter for a 535i will work (same thing actually). You can do it yourself if you're handy with the tools and are NOT afraid to remove the intake plenum and horns.

The way I did it was remove the intake plenum and horns as one unit. Of course that was after removing the air box & meter. At that point you have a straight shot at the starter. You will need a 17mm short stubby wrench to remove the bolt on the block side because.....a socket won't quite fit! Darn the bad luck. That is the only tough nut so so speak. The rest is wiring and simple stuff. Good luck.

My solenoid is acting up lately, (not wanting to engage, just spinning). Has anyone taken out their starter before? What is the procedure? Think it could be done over a weekend? Can you buy a rebuilt solenoid, or should I take it to a starter/alternator shop and have them just rebuild the whole starter/solenoid? Any input would be appreciated!!
