Ok, I've got an 85 European M5 (grey marketed into the us, NOT an m535), with 180,000 miles on it. I've had virtually everything ELSE rebuilt on the car (tranny, new exhaust, etc. etc.). Now it's time for the motor.

I can:

1) have it rebuilt with parts
2) buy a factory rebuilt
3) buy an aftermarket rebuilt
4) buy a used motor.

1) seems too much like a crapshoot. 4) is right out.
2) is probably too expensive. 3) seems like the best answer. I've seen several companies that advertise rebuilds. One has 3.8 liter stroker (bav engine exchange) and one has 3.7 and 3.9 liter strokers (metric mechanic). Anyone have any experience with any of these motors in terms of strength, hp, reliability, smog, etc.?

thanks...

The price book says #2 will cost you 13k

Cross off #2 :)
