James,

Is this the little piece of foam about the size of a pencil eraser that goes into the knuckle at the transmission end?

I've always wondered what the function of that foam piece is.

The knuckle slips over the rod coming out of the transmission and is then firmly held in place by a locating pin. The pin is captured by the spring steel ring that goes around it.

When you install a new one, it does seem to get a little compressed when you push the knuckle onto the shaft. Is it there to preload the knuckle?

The pin fits so tightly into the knuckle, there isn't any play in the assembly.

And isn't it supposed to be oiled?

Douglas
