In Reply to: Redline oil??????? I've heard bad things... posted by Zack on March 23, 2001 at 02:41:07:

You're the first person I've heard say that in many years. AFAIK, nearly all club racers use it, it smooths the shifts in every single car I've put it in, and I've never heard anything like what you've said. I know the Getrag 280 is notorious for eating synchros (1, 3, and 5), so when I get it rebuilt by Jim Blanton, I'll find out what he recommends. I've used Redline in my 335k mile-old 535i tranny sine I bought it in 1994, and I haven't noticed any detrimental effects in 6 years and over 100k miles.

The factory recommends ATF, which is nearly impossible to shift cold. It took a few seconds for my M3 to shift from 1st to 2nd (if at all) to prevent SERIOUS grinding. After the Redline, it shifts smoothly when stone cold or red hot from high-speed driving. It's 170k miles old, and I don't think the POs knew how to double clutch or rev match, so the synchros are probably already shot. My friend and I put it in his M3 over 5 years ago, and you could actually pull the lever back into 2nd when cold. Previously you just had to skip it and go to third until it was warmed up. That car has seen 100 or more autocrosses (with him and me driving it) and he's now a driving instructor and club-racer. It has over 170k miles now, and it shifts practically like new.

Maybe the guys who say it's bad already had shot trannies that they attributed to Redline.
