If you ARE an enthusiast you are ready to make the sacrifice. For me, that means doing a lot of the work - almost all of it - myself. I built a detached, heated, 2-car garage with lots of workbech and toolbox space, a compressor, welding stuff, etc. I bought my M5 in late 96. Now I have an old beater Jeep pickup and and fixing up a 2002 so that I can soon make the M5 a leisure-only ride. It now has 142K, and I don't plan on it seeing 200K ever! In 15 years or so, when I retire, I'll start tearing it down all the way for a complete restore.
If you think you need to depend on dealer service, buy a new 528 - it's a faster car anyway.
