The dash on my e28 M5 has a few cracks but it has a dash cover. It is one of those hard plastic covers that look exactly like the black leather on the dash. To be honest, I didn't even know the dash had a cover on it until about 2 weeks after I bought the car. They are for sale in the new BMP Design catalog for $87.95, part# 78794. They look fine and fit perfectly on the dash. plus they are much cheaper than a new dash.
