My M5 and M3 both came with the BMW tool to remove spark plugs. Older BMWs came with a very comprehensive toolkit because the engineers wanted and expected customers to be able to fix minor problems. The E28 M5 came with the same kit as my old 1975 530i did. The M3 came with a small kit to save money and weight.

The previous owner of your car must have lost/sold the 2-piece M-car spark plug tool and replaced it with a regular 13/16" spark plug tool. They're very hard to find. I will contact Stahlwille on Monday to see if their 18mm spark plug tool will fit down the hole. Meanwhile, you can go buy a $4 Craftsman socket and grind it down until it fits. You'll need a 10" extension, too.
