I have to second Brian's comments, so here is my tale of woe....
I purchased an E28 M5 a few weeks ago. I had been casually looking and believe it or not, this was an impulse buy. Good price and excellent visual condition sold me. Test drive and run through a trusted mechanic in our area was enough for me.
I have already found ou the following things about me M5:
1. As Brian pointed out, any sane human would not purchase this car, however if you are a car junkie and a BMW fan, this is probably the best of the M cars for a daily driver. It is an absolute hoot to drive, period and seats 4 as well. I have driven most marques and can safely say this is definitely a great Q-Ship.
2. Although mine was well cared for in a conventional sense, as I drive it and listen to the mechanicals, I am finding out that even a BMW with 132K on it like mine does not hold up forever. I stongly suggest that you are mechanically inclined or as Brian said, you have a good mechanic. With your current portfolio of cars, I presume you have this covered. Any E28 M5 you find, unless you are willing to drop 20K+ will have at least 100K on it and will need attention to the suspension, bearings, driveline, etc.
3. I would suggest a compression check if you can arrange for it prior to purchase. Min 155-170 psi per cylinder. Have them run a wet one as well if you can to check the rings.
4. They all were black from the factory (schwartz) and had tan (natur) leather interiors. A few black interiors are out there, see the posting for the Dinan M5 if you want to see digitals of a black interior car. Very rare.
5. When you drive it, make sure to take it out on the freeway for a 80-90 MPH run. The E28's tend to have a shimmy with age, a solid BMW should be like a rock at speed (as you probably know). Any significant slop in the steering or in the front end are bad....
6. If it does have 100K+, check to see if the self-levelling system is still in use. If so, plan on budgeting funds to replace the system with a good set of performance springs and shocks (mine has Dinan springs and Bilsteins on it).
I could ramble on however you seem to be well prepared (better than most) to get the E28 fever.
Drop me a line if I can be of further assistance or provide a shoulder to cry on. Many of the regulars here on this site have been very helpful to me and I will endeavor to reciprocate (like Brian)!
Best regards,
JSHelm
