I'll check the wiring diagrams when I get home tonight. I know on my van it has a pressure switch where it won't allow the compressor to turn on if there is no freon in the system. Any idea what kind of charge you have in the system? As far as cooling goes, the e28 is known for its poor cooling ability, if your car has the 134 conversion it will probably be slightly worse than an r12 system.

On both my E28 M5 and E30 M3 the AC compressor clutch does not appear to engage when I push the button. The buttons light up blue, the aux fan comes on, but no compressor. Anyone have wiring diagrams or colors that I can check? Can I consult the E28 and E30 Bentley manuals? Are the wiring schemes similar from the M cars?

ALSO--the M3 has decided to (severely) rub one of the compressor lines against the frame rail. Great. I don't know if it's the high side or low side, but a new rubber hose is needed. Where can I get a standard refrigerant hose to clamp on to the existing metal ends? This would cut cost significantly. I've seen it done before, just need a source for hoses.

The M5 appears to have an R134a conversion, because the valves and compressor are different. The wiring to the compressor clutch looks OK. I'd assume there should be 12VDC at that wire when I hit the AC button.

Is there any way to get outrageous cooling from these older AC systems? I'd hate to have to drive everywhere this summer in my fiancee's Mustang because it's AC cranks out colder air in 100F temps. The M5 is black/tan (obviously), and the M3 has black interior.
