Just done the works on my M6 (same engine of course)

Replaced chain, all guides, all sprockets, front timing chain seal, all gaskets but did not take the head off. Also replaced tensioner, oil pump chain sump gasket.

Parts cost £780 plus UK vat at 17.5 % but including 8% discount from BMW main agent.

Labour was £550 - it took him 32 hours but labour rate was very cheap.

You need big breaker bar on crankshaft nut and a very good quality puller for crankshaft sprocket as it is an interference fit.

Chain and sprockets were knackered on mine (150k miles) also the timing was out by two teeth on the crank hub - very lucky not to have blown the engine.

Best of luck

Ian

I am doing a rebuild on a S38 and I was wondering if anyone knows the best place to buy the chain, tesioner rail, and piston. What have you guys payed for these items? Thanks.
