Thanks a bunch to all of you! Sheldon seems to have posted the answer that I was looking for!

I know about the 17 mm wrench from reading the FAQ file on removing the starter. I will try your way, Sheldon, & let you know how I do. I like the idea of not buying a whole new starter (my wife won't let me put in a used one, thanks. I would if it were my M6, however.) just because the gear is shot! Yeah, I DID think that it was the solenoid!
