I was puzzled when my mechanic said if it wasn't an S38, he would suspect the chain cover. What sense does this make??

He is correct and it is because of the design, the std big 6 engines have removal seperate timing chain covers and thus more areas to leak. On the M engines the timing cover is intergral with the rocker box and the cylinder head
