In US, 1988 M5 means built in 1987, 1988 model year (MY), it's an E28. US E28 M5s were all straight black, had Shadowline trim (no polished aluminum, all powdercoated black), big US bumpers, same airdam as 535is. Nearly all came with tan leather sport interior, a couple (maybe a dozen or so) had black leather sport interior.

They had E34 M5s in Europe from 1989-1995, US got them in 1991-1993. The latest Euro E34 M5s had 3.8L engines ith 340HP stock. US only got 3.6L M5 with 315HP stock.
