cheapo wheel spacers (archive)

I have been told that the way to improve cornering is to get wider. One person recommended wheel spacers to push the wheels out farther, but the ones in Bavarian catalog are expensive. I have found some at J.C. Whitney for $6.95 each that push the wheels 5/16".

So I have a couple of questions. Are the aluminum spacers from Whitneys doable? Will I notice much difference adding 10/16 to width? How about if I stacked 2 spacers to widen track a total of 1 1/4"?

And please don't tell me to get new wheels. I got this car as a daily driver and don't want to put tons of money into it and it had brand new 390s when I bought it. I'm not about to throw them out, but would like better cornering without spending tons of money.

All I've done is rebuild front end and replace worn shocks with Bilsteins; overall I am satisfied with the car, but if the spacers improve cornering and I'm spending under $100, why not?
