I bought an 88 E28 M5 three months ago, with 89,600 miles on the odometer. Paid $10,000 and have put another $4,000 into it (InspectionII, Air conditioning replacement, tires, etc etc).
Still need to go with Dinan suspension upgrade.
But - I am using it as a daily driver, average about 1500 miles per month, no problem, and it's a lot of fun to drive.

Go for it.
