Transmission Fluid Leak (archive)

I have a small leak from the top part of the transmission on my E28 M5. My mechanic believes that it is coming from a leaking seal around the "detent spring cover". He was unable to fix the leak on his last attempt and now believes that the cover itself may have a hairline crack. He has ordered a new cover. None of this has been expensive, so far, and the mechanic has worked on my car a good bit and I trust him.

I am, however, getting tired of this dragging out. Have any of you had a similar problem, and if so, how was it resolved? Does my mechanic's approach sound reasonable?

I appreciate the advice and guidance that I have received in the past from members of this board and thank you again for any assistance with this problem.
