The M535i was a regular 3.5l motor. Same as the 535i, but with a spoiler kit, stiffer shocks, and sport seats. This info is right out of every BMW book. The M535i is comparable to the US 535is, NOT the M5. The M535i was available in Europe only, but brought into the US via importers. There are quite a few "Gray Market" M535i cars out there. One was just for sale. I looked into it. I passed on it because it had the regular "green spec" motor with a cat.

I UNDERSTAND THE MAJOR DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE E12 AND THE E28 IS THAT THE LATER IS A TWIN CAM VERSION.
IS THAT THE ONLY MAJOR DIFFERENCE?
ARE THEY BOTH STILL CONSIDERED TO BE M5's? (TALKING ABOUT A 1986 BMW M535)
ANYONE KNOW ANY OTHER MAJOR DIFFERENCES?

PLEASE EXCUSE MY IGNORANCE, I'M NEW TO THE CLUB

BEN
