It's not obvious to me how they are connected. There is no electrical connection to the fan clutch, so how does it know when to engage or disengage based on the temp of the coolant?


We're talking about the AUX fan in front of the radiator. The fan clutch, as you note, is non electrical and is thermostatically operated by tthe temperature of the air flowing across the clutch fins.
