In most simple terms there are many substantial differences between the M535i (e28) and M5 as the M535I is mechanically identical to the 535i/s.

The M535i was powered by a 3.4 litre single overhead cam design engine that produced 218hp, which also powered the US 535i/s. Technically the M535i differed from the standard model with upgraded springs, Bilstein gas dampers, roll bars, and a 25 percent limited slip differential. The M535i was available with a four speed ZF automatic and a close ratio five speed dog leg gear box. Many of the M535s enhancements were cosmetic. The Motrosport dept. gave the M535i larger 165x390 alloys, an M Technic body kit, consisting of a deeper front airdam, side skirts, rear valance and a trunk lid spoiler that was shared with the M5. Inside, the M535i had the M635CSi seats with extendable thigh bolsters and an M Technic steering wheel. Clearly Motorsport's aim was to give the 535i a more aggressive character but it fell short of the amazing performance the M5 yielded. By the end of the e28 M535I production nearly 9,500 units were sold, nearly four and a half times the amount of e28 M5s produced.

The M5 is an entirely different car that wore the M mark in every respect. The M5 was based on the 3.5 litre M88/S38 that powered the M1. The robust M88/S38 had twin cams and a four valve per cylinder layout that produced nearly 286bhp(Euro)/ 256bhp(US). In addition the M5 had a Bosh Motoronic engine management system, a 280 Getrag five speed transmission, and a 25 percent limited slip differential. No automatic transmission would ever be available for the M5. The M5 had a well-developed sport tuned suspension, with load leveling rear suspension, thicker anti roll bars, stiffer shocks, and shorter springs. To stop the M5, larger disc brakes and calipers were fitted into 16 inch BBS alloy wheels. Outside, the M5 had shadowline trim, the familiar M535i trunk mounted spoiler, and revised front and rear bumpers for US spec cars. Inside, the M5 had the same M Technic steering wheel as the M535i, Leather/Buffalo upholstery, and M logos adorning the sill plates and cluster. Furthermore the M5 was hand built and could be fitted with a full array of options. By the end of the e28 M5 production 2,145 units were sold worldwide with 1,236 sold in the US. The end result was 5 series super car that rocket to 60mph in 6seconds.
