Ive been there but more story was even more expesive. The pistons were installed reversed as well. A complete second rebuild required including new pistons rings and bearings. Had to mortagage the house. No come back as the engine rebuilder closed doors. Second time round I did it myself. The results are good so far its done 60,000 with no leakdown probs.

To rebuild an s38 engine is a fair job as it is more complicated than the good old M30 but with care and a positive go get em attitude can be done in the home garage. I sourced a lot of my parts aftermarket. I live down under and we pay a big premium on original parts. As these engines are not to common there is usually only one parts manufacturer. Aftermarket is usually the same as OEM.
Cleanliness is paramount. Extreme care should be taken in the following area. Get a manual

* short motor assembly double check all clearances
strip back to bare block and degrease all parts then wash block in hot deteregent twice the blow dry. Spray demoisturising fluid everywhere.
start assembly on engine stand. When you are not working cover block with a fresh garbage bag. Make sure the are you are working in is clean.

* check that the valve seats have been cut right

* check the valve spring pressure

* be careful when installing cams. Make sure you dont have any pistons on TDC while installing cam. You could break one.

* adhere to all specified tensions. Use a torque wrench on every bolt.

When rebuilding these engines dont rush. If there is something you are not sure of go and check it out thoroughly. They are a race quality engine
Take care and you will do are very good job.
Original rings are the go but the cost is high. I used SealedPro moly. They seem to hold out well.
Use only the best sythetic oil particularly if you drive it day to day. Please contact me if you
need any help.
