Canadian 1988 M5 and U.S. Registration (archive)

I am a U.S. resident and am considering looking at an E28 M5 that is in Canada. I am not sure if the car will need to be federalized before it can be registered in the U.S. If it does need to be federalized I do not know how to go about that. If anyone has any inforamation to pass along I would appreciate it.
