approximately 1400 (us and canada)... there seems some doubt that bmw na was completely forthcoming on this issue.
there were two production runs... VINS 2791000 to i forget ... and 2875000-2875370.
they were the very last of the E28s... appeared as 88s in mid 1987 ... initially selling well.. but as more came in... dealers found trouble selling them for their high 40s prices. by early '89 you could buy the last of the 88 M5s still sitting on dealer lots for prices in the low 30s.
