I am a U.S. resident and am considering looking at an E28 M5 that is in Canada. I am not sure if the car will need to be federalized before it can be registered in the U.S. If it does need to be federalized I do not know how to go about that. If anyone has any inforamation to pass along I would appreciate it.

I've purchased a 1988 M///5 from Canada in Feb of 2001. I was faced with the same things that you are asking yourself at this time. Here's what I did. First make sure the vehicle has the Federal Compliancy sticker. This is located in the engine compartment. The vehicle MUST be DOT certified. Then you must write to BMW Canada and give them the VIN # and they will send you a letter that you will use in order to make entry into the USA through customs. If you do not have ALL documentation with bill of sale etc,, you will NOT be able to bring the car any further into the USA. I have 2 1988 M///5 ( 1 USA car / 1 Canadian European black on black car ) for sale. Why are you interested in a Canadian car? Are you considering selling your 95 M///3? How much are willing to spend? Where are you located? I can give you further information for export if needed, just e-mail.
