88 M5 starts cold, runs fair, after about 1 min it either smoothes out or stops dead. This problem has gotten worse over past 2 weeks. I was thinking fuel pump was on the way out, but this was wrong ($113 bad diagnosis by lazy mechanic who did not check fuel pressure after car stalled (me!)) Anyway, tonight I will dig into this... Have tools and lots of experience, but I would appreciate some advice from anyone who has experienced same. TIA, Mark
Test the diagnostic connector pin 5 for 0-12 volt cycling after warm-up. This is the O2 signal buffered.
If it doesn't cycle you should try to adjust the CO Allen screw on the AFM. If that doesn't work your O2 sensor may be bad. I would do a rich/lean test before you put money out on an O2 sensor first.
The engine idle needs to be set with the throttle switch disconnected and the three pins in the cable connector bridged together. Set to 850 RPMs while you observe Pin 5 cycling.
If the engine just dies, even under power you may have a bad main relay.
After that you may have some serious problems.
