Next time it stopped, I tapped (hit) the DME with my hand and the car instantly restarted. I carried on doing this for a few days to prove it wasn't a coincidence.
Next I opened up the DME to check for any bad soldered joints. Nothing obvious, so I ran the car for a few days with the cover off the DME and it laying in the open glovebox (this could be very dangerous if you don't know what you are doing. There could be very high voltages. Don't do this unless you know what you are doing). The next few times it stopped I gently tapped with a plastic pen around the board until it restarted. Once I'd found the area that made it restart, I resoldered all the joints around there. I guessed that since I was going to have to get it repaired anyway, I'd have a go.
It transformed the car. Much better. It still stopped occasionally but since I hadn't screwed it up last time I bit the bullet and carefully resoldered all the joints on the board. No problems since.
I was very wary about doing this, but in the end it saved alot of time (this is my every day car)and money.
Hope this helps
Cheers
