E28 M5 production began in October 1984 and ended in June 1988. However United States production did not begin until several years later in November 1986 (11/86) beginning with Vehicle Identification Number WBSDC93032J 2791000. A note should be made that the WBSDC9302J279XXX production sequence ended in October 1987 (10/87) with Vehicle Identification Number WBSDC9302J2792000. The production sequence resumed in October 1987(10/87) with Vehicle Identification Number WBSDC9302J2875000. The last of the United States Specification E28 M5s were completed in June (6/88) and ended with Vehicle Identification Number WBSDC9302J2875370.

To answer cecottom3's questions that I didn't address in my last post,

To rcbmw,
I do appreciate you about your response. I think it is a rare opportunity to find a 88' M5.
But according to your mention, all the euro-spec M5 were hand made. So, how about the US-spec.? I just know there is an apparent difference in engine. If it is actually made by hand, it will be worthy to collect it, won't it?

I just know there is an apparent difference in engine.

In regards to engine differences, this topic has been discussed in great length and if you perform an archive search you should find a thorough analysis of the differences between United States Specification E28 M5s. One of the most significant reasons why enthusiastic North American customers had to wait until 1988 for the E28 M5 was because federal regulations would not permit, non-catalyst equipped E28 M5 (M88) into the United States, which has among the toughest emissions control regulations. Most notably a pair of catalysts were added along with revised camshaft, head and engine management system. In all this only reduced the M5s already amazing horsepower to 256bhp from 286bhp. United States specification examples were given equal size headlamps and 5 mph impact absorbing bumpers, to comply with Federal regulations.

If it is actually made by hand, it will be worthy to collect it, won't it?

I like your thinking, however this does not hold true. Although the E24 M6 cost a staggering $58,600, significantly more than the M5s 45,500 MSRP, its resale value has done remarkably well. The E24 M6 mechanically is very similar to the E28 M5, although it was not hand made like the E28 and E34 M5s, in fact the M6 was produced alongside the ordinary 635CSi. Despite the fact that M6 was not hand built, build quality remained impressively high. Today an M6 will fetch a few thousand more than a similarly miled M5, and that may be partly due to the fact its a coupe. And people will always pay more for a coupe, especially when it wears the Motorsport mark.

Cheers,
RCBMW E28 M5 (37k)
