Jim, I have to disagree with everyone else. I sold my 98 E36 M3 soon after I bought my 1988 E28 M5. I've taken both of them to a few tracks, Watkins Glen, Lime Rock, and Summit Point, and the M3 is just a better designed car. I have a Dinan stage 3 suspension in the M5 and it is a definite improvement but, the car is just too big to corner as well as the M3. Then there's the brakes, they'll both warp rotors but, you won't get the unbelieveble front end shaking when they do. And then you'll have to replace all of the bushing in the front-end. I replaced all the componants of my E28's front-end and the shaking went away for about two track days. The rubber bushings just are not up to the task, they don't last long at all. The E36 has 240hp stock, the E28 has 256 but, weighs about 400 pounds more. I a straight line drag race 0-60mph the E36 would win, the top speed of the E28 would allow it to beat the E36 in a race for a couple of miles, if there are no turns involved. My best lap time at Watkins Glen in my M5 is 2:27:06, my best lap time in my M3 is 2:24:19. And I consider myself a better driver now then I was when I drove the M3. Bottom line is get the M3.
