This car (e28 M5) makes a lot of valvetrain racket on cold start. Sounds like a combination of T/C and valve lash. Quiets down when car starts to warm up (This happens after about 1 min.) Is this normal for these cars? I plan to check valve clearance next week. Is it possible to assess t/c condition w/cam cover removed? My assumption from posts is that shims are on top of buckets (ala Volvo) and can be changed w/o cam removal. Does Volvo shim removal tool work in this application? Does anyone have a sketch or picture of this tool? (so I can fabricate)
