Well, from my understanding of how shim and bucket valve systems work, what you're describing is what typically will happen. Over time as the valve opens and closes on the seat, eventually the seat will start to wear and the springs will pull the valve further out to continue sealing. As the valve comes further out it gets closer to the bucket and shim, hence the reduced clearance between the shim and cam lobe. Tighter clearances are definitely worse than loose, so you need to take care of this ASAP because you don't know how long it's been that way. Be prepared to bend over, our local private BMW mechanic quoted about 200-300 for a valve adjust on the s-38, and I'm guessing that's without the shims.
In a recent check up of my new to me M5, my mechanic found the valve clearances to be below the recommended values (I can't remember exact numbers but .028 seems to be stuck in my head). The gist is that they are tight as opposed to loose. This is a bit beyond me. Can anyone help me out by explaining what is going on, what causes this, was this done by the po to cover anything up, how quickly should I rectify this situation?
