In Reply to: Is the US E28 M5 Single Or Double Timing Chain?? posted by Tim In PA on July 17, 2001 at 12:46:43:

US engine has a double row timing chain. It will not break, but could stretch some. Also, the tension rails do wear, especially the plastic one, and can deteriorate to the point of breaking apart. This could cause the chain to jump the cam and do some valve damage.

Ask me how I know.

Mine had this happen at 120K miles and a mechanic down the street from my regular one said it was a good (very good) idea to have the timing kit replaced/checked every 100K miles.

I bent all 12 intake valves and was only cruising at 40 mph in 3rd when it happened. Luckily none of the exhaust valves were hurt.

You decide what is best for you, but I recommend getting the tensioners replaced at least.

Good luck,
Jim
