2600 for pistons? hmmm that certainly could be possible seeing as how they are a motorsport part. check w/ maximillian and see what their cost is. 1-800-950-2002. although most mechanics won't install parts that you bring to them. there's certainly nothing wrong with checking around before taking a 9 grand plunge. www.bmrparts.com claims $7995 for a rebuilt S38. seems like they may cut you a deal if you just send them your bottom end for refurb. i've never used these folks before just seen their ads. and just to be fair, i have seen some posts from people upset about problems they've had with their service or work. how much does mr. fahey want to rebuild your bottom end? if his price is similar to your local tech it'd be worth it (at least in my eyes) to send there. btw - what happened to your motor that you decided to get head work done in the first place? how many miles did you have on the motor? good luck - jeff h.
Meaning I don't have any to throw at my problem..
I've posted a few times about my head removal. Sent it to F. Fahey and had it worked on and am ready to put it back on. While it was off it made sense to put new rings in and replace the bearings. (Bearing were worn into the babbet)Well to make a long story short I got concerned about my ability to do it myself. So I've towed it to a local BMW specialist who now tells me my pistons are worn beyond spec and need to be replaced. This means boring out the block. Basically a complete build up but using stock crank. 9 grand and I already paid for head work.
Doesn't this sound like WAY too much for this work? $2600 is the charge just for the 10 over pistons. Also includes new fuel line, hoses, crank & cam gears, etc, etc...
Any alternative suggestions you folks could pass along to get me on the road is greatly appreciated.
TIA,
Michael
