John, No new cams, only pistons. Just can't believe 9k to put it back together with new pistons. I think I've heard of someone who can work the old pistons and put them back within specs. Wonder if anyone else has had to go through this process?

Thanks,

Michael

Meaning I don't have any to throw at my problem..

I've posted a few times about my head removal. Sent it to F. Fahey and had it worked on and am ready to put it back on. While it was off it made sense to put new rings in and replace the bearings. (Bearing were worn into the babbet)Well to make a long story short I got concerned about my ability to do it myself. So I've towed it to a local BMW specialist who now tells me my pistons are worn beyond spec and need to be replaced. This means boring out the block. Basically a complete build up but using stock crank. 9 grand and I already paid for head work.

Doesn't this sound like WAY too much for this work? $2600 is the charge just for the 10 over pistons. Also includes new fuel line, hoses, crank & cam gears, etc, etc...

Any alternative suggestions you folks could pass along to get me on the road is greatly appreciated.

TIA,

Michael

I contacted my old mechanic in St Louis ( Greg Stroud ) @ Bimmers R Us, and asked him what a rebuild would cost. He mentioned that he had recently done a 1988 M///6, and rebuilt using stock pistons and rings, for a total of around $4,800. I asked about cams on a rebuild, and that's where the high $$ come in.He mentioned the cost of about $3,500 EACH. Are you getting NEW cams on your rebuild? Weisco also custom builds pistons for this application. Lunati,Crane ( cam only company's ) can custom ground any automotive spec cam ( out of a solid chuunk of billet ) for about $600. You should make as many phone calls as possible before making your decision. Ask about reputation, expierience, Good luck
