Michael,

Been there, etc.

Here's how $5,000 becomes $10,000. It's the old "While you're in there" scenerio.

If you're rebuilding the engine, are you going to put the old clutch back in? (add $350.00 for a new clutch kit) Don't forget the pilot bearing. And will you install a new clutch without resurfacing the flywheel?

Surely you'll replace the timing chain and tension rails, right? (add $850.00)

Reusing the fuel injectors? (add $200.00 to calibrate and clean)

Ever try to replace the idle speed control valve while the engine's back in the car? It's much easier to install it while the engine's disassembled. (add $100.00)

On and on it goes. Oil pump. Gasket set. Main bearings. Rod bearings and new bolts. Water pump and thermostat. Pistons and rings. Machine shop labor. Don't underestimate how expensive these items can be! I spent $951.40 just on hoses, clamps, bolts and such and I get wholesale pricing.

Like you, I tried to spend as little as possible until I finally realized I was going to have to bite the bullet. My car sat for one year while I saved the money to do it right.

You mentioned that you have 165,000 miles and the crankshaft is O.K. Did you check the crankshaft thrust? How much is it worn and how much remains before the crank is out of spec?

It seems like you were on the right track with Fahey. Perhaps you should consult him before trying to reuse "reworked" pistons.

Good luck and let us know how your project turns out.

Douglas
