My E28 M5 with 130K didn't pass CA smog test last week. The test is done at 1500rpm and 2000rpm on a dyno and the cat and engine were hot. It failed on CO - CO levels were 0.7% with O2 analyzer plugged in. All other emissions (HC and NO) were in spec.

I spent a couple of hours with my friends emissions analyzer, adjusting the allen screw on the air flow meter and minor adjustments to the screw on the throttle bodies. The emissions were pretty insensitive to the adjustments, both with and without the O2 sensor.

My buddy thinks it might be the AFM, O2 sensor or the throttle bodies.

What are the boards thoughts?

Thanks in advance,
Mike M

My wife's '88 M5 failed in CA a few years back, even after having passed a chassis dynometer test in Arizona. It turned out that the oxygen sensor wasn't working.
