I had the same problem and it took my mechanic a few attempts to get it fixed. This is my best recollection of what he told me was the problem. I don't know what I'm talking about here, so forgive me, if this doesn't make complete sense.

He replaced the seal, and it continued to leak. He figured that the "detent cover" had a hairline crack and was, in fact, the source of the leak. He replaced that and it's been fine since. Let me know if you have any further questions. I can call the mechanic to clarify.

OK, Here's the deal. 1988 M5. The oil is leaking right at the rear of the trans. I thought it was the output shaft seal, so I pulled the driveshaft and guibo and replaced the seal. The shifter seal looked clean, so I did not mess with it. I put it all together, and no change. The oil is dripping (more like pouring) right onto the cats. Lots of smoke fills the car with just a drop of oil hitting the heatshield. What should I be looking for here. I would appreciate any help.
