I feel your pain! I'm rebuilding the top end of my M5 engine myself and it is a tedious process, but very satisfying. I've taken tons of time to do the research right so it will be an A+++ job, but throwing money at a problem does not get you the best results. I paid around $640 for head machining at what is known as the best shop in GA, Eagle Machine in Auburn GA. Special tool rental from http://www.koalamotorsport.com (Brett Anderson) was $240. Parts are $1000 for everything needed and I did replace the vacuum lines and coolant hoses.
If you cannot do the labour yourself, find a reputable tech. If that is going to cost you big bucks, I won't be surprised, but don't pick one w/o shopping around. My labour costs are zero.
On the parts front, I can save you quite a bit. Try Jack Money at http://www.elephantmotorsports.com. This is a good friend of mine just starting out a parts business and he has some really good sources. I think the stock M5 pistons (Mahle) can be got for a bit over $1200 from one of his sources and he might have better sources now. Anyway, he is a good guy and will discuss this with you if you want. Yes, I am plugging for a friend, but I'm pretty sure you'll be happy with the service.

Meaning I don't have any to throw at my problem..
I've posted a few times about my head removal. Sent it to F. Fahey and had it worked on and am ready to put it back on. While it was off it made sense to put new rings in and replace the bearings. (Bearing were worn into the babbet)Well to make a long story short I got concerned about my ability to do it myself. So I've towed it to a local BMW specialist who now tells me my pistons are worn beyond spec and need to be replaced. This means boring out the block. Basically a complete build up but using stock crank. 9 grand and I already paid for head work.
Doesn't this sound like WAY too much for this work? $2600 is the charge just for the 10 over pistons. Also includes new fuel line, hoses, crank & cam gears, etc, etc...
Any alternative suggestions you folks could pass along to get me on the road is greatly appreciated.
TIA,
Michael
