James:

I've done this about 6 times on various E30 cars and the E28 setup is very similar. This is not a true DIY procedure.

$600 sounds right for all the labour if the shop does not have the tool. If they do, it is about 45 mins/side for the subframe bushings and about 30 mins/side for the semi-trailing arms bushings. Dog bones are easy.

However, the latter two need to be torqued with the car on the ground with standard load so make very sure of that. If not, the bushings will be torn up in short order.

You can rent the tool from Brett Anderson at http://www.koalamotorsport.com, but the bushings can get stuck in the chassis and it is tough to get the subframe to drop. I had to use an air hammer shake them loose on my car.

Also, while you're in there you should get the semi-trailing arm bushings. While not as easy to feel an improvement in as the subframe bushings, they, too, wear out. Urethane can be used with lesser increase in noise than if you go with urethane subframe bushings, but the factory bushings are cheap and good.

I've got write-ups for most of this stuff on my WWW page.

The subframe bushings are CHEAP ($30 each), but the labor is a bitch. I did it twice on my M5. Go with factory bushings. The urethane filled ones are noisy.

The diff bushing is almost $200, specific to the M5, and it is probably bad, too. The dogbone links are about $80-100 each. You can change the diff bushing and dogbones yourself, but I'd recommend getting it done at a shop.
